Book Review

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

What I Thought:

With the new release of The Testament by Margaret Atwood, I thought this would be a good time to talk about The Handmaid’s Tale!

What I loved: The world the author created. Each new event had my jaw dropping at how much the world changed during Offred’s lifetime.

How I felt: Oh there were tears at times. I’m a mom and am always a bit heartbroken at seeing another mom suffer.

To Read or Not To Read: This is such a must read!! I found this book at Goodwill a few years ago (before the TV show came out), where I love to grab random books without knowing anything about the book. I shop by the cover and title and kind of roll the dice. Well this book was a gem! It took the first chapter for me to really get into this book, but then I was hooked!

What’s This Book About Anyway?

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, a post-modern day society. She lives with the Commander and his wife and is ruled by their wishes. This new world requires handmaid’s to sleep with the husband of the home home to try and get pregnant. The story is written in the present, but flashes back to the before years that Offred remembers. The book unfolds in a well-written story that had me constantly wondering what would happen next. A must-read!
