A Summer Project Begins
My Thoughts:
What I Loved: This story’s focus on a female in a male dominated career was really impactful for me. I loved that the daughter looked up to the mom and helped her on projects for work. I think it is so important for our daughters to feel empowered to do what they want with their lives, whatever that is and this book did a wonderful job of saying that.
How I Felt: The book introduces us to Rita and then Rita gives a background on what her mom’s job is, how Rita helps her mom, and what a remodel is like. I felt that the book used big words, but immediately followed it up with a “and that means” giving the child an easy definition for clarity. My daughter was REALLY interested in this book. She kept wanting to read the story to me instead of me reading it to her. That does not usually happen. I think she connected with Rita and liked that Rita was speaking directly to her. Rita almost felt like Dora, you know, the explorer. Rita introduced herself, explained things, and helped the child navigate through a new experience.
To Read or Not To Read: This is a great book for home, at a daycare, school, or library! It’s an excellent educational resource on learning how a home remodel works and on a career as a general contractor.
What’s This Book About Anyway?
Rita’s mother is a general contractor, focused on home remodels. Rita gets to help her mom with small tasks for a remodel and she invites the reader to come with her and see what it is all about. She explains what her mom’s job is like overall, then tells us about a job from start to finish that her mom is working on.
