Who doesn’t love a story with mermaids, myths, and destiny? Dylan McFinn and The Sea Serpent’s Fury had all of that and so much more!
This story starts with Culbert McFinn, a sea captain with a concern for the environment. He invents all these things to help get rid of the mounting number of plastic in the oceans. But then he’s caught by a mermaid and taken down to Lapatia, the land of mermaids. He finds himself quite happy with all the mermaids 😂 and chooses to stay there. And so, Dylan McFinn is born, half mermaid-half human. For Dylan’s 13th birthday, they take a family trip above the water, and that trip turns out to be quite eventful! Dylan’s destiny becomes clear as sea monsters and witches try to invade.

I really enjoyed the world that Liam Jenkins created! Lapatia was described beautifully. I felt like I was right there! The writing throughout the entire story was exciting and descriptive, really pulling me into the book!
I loved the characters and their actions in this high-energy adventure! Dylan McFinn is a great MC with some wit and sass, and some heroic moments! I don’t think there was ever a dull moment as I moved through this book, which makes it perfect for so many readers!
Overall, I thought this was a very well-written story with wonderful details that pulled me into the setting and the characters. This was an easy, short read at only 184 pages, so I think it’s ideal for a middle-grade reader, but absolutely works for a YA or adult reader as well!
To Read or Not To Read:
I would recommend Dylan McFinn & The Sea Serpent’s Fury to readers that enjoy stories of the high-seas with fantasy and tons of adventure! While this is put into the YA genre, I think it’s perfectly acceptable for a middle-grade reader!

“Dylan sat gazing out of his classroom window, waiting for the bell to ring. He was watching seahorses playing in the reeds of sea kelp swaying in the gentle current … and not paying any attention at all to the maths lesson that was continuing outside of his daydream. “Pssst … psst,” Dylan heard behind him.
Murdoch passed a note forward. Dylan quickly grabbed it and opened it under his desk without Mrs Pike-Teeth seeing it.
It read, Happy birthday Bubble Boy!”
Dylan McFinn is an ordinary twelve-year-old. Ordinary, that is, if you ignore the fact that he lives deep under the Pacific Ocean with his family The McFinn’s.
As he battles monsters and maelstroms on his first day as a teenager, Dylan discovers that he can be an awful lot more than he imagines and a nostalgic trip to the past was more than just a rite of passage. It was a passage to his destiny.
