There are so many things that are new in a child’s life. I really enjoy finding books that help them experience these life changes. The Adventures of Molly & Ollie: Moving Day is the story of Molly and her move to a new home.

Molly is worried about moving. She doesn’t want everything to be different, and she is sad to leave her friends. When she gets to the new house, she meets Ollie, an owl that lives in her backyard. He helps her to see the things that are the same, like all of her stuffed animals and toys. He is a welcoming new friend for her, and he makes the move much easier!

The main message for this book is easy for children to understand. Molly’s worries are ones that kids can easily connect with, and I think the story will be a comfort for kids that are worried about changes in their lives. I read this with my daughter, and she really enjoyed it. I think that this book will resonate with all children, not just ones that are moving.

This was a good story with fun characters and some great surprises! I would recommend this book for children in kindergarten through middle elementary.

Q: What made you write a book about moving?

I moved around a lot growing up. Moving can be scary, so I wanted to use my experience to help kids know that there is a fun side to moving, too. Moving can open up all kinds of new adventures.

Q: There are many books out there about moving. What makes yours different?

My hope is that the fun and magic that Ollie brings to the story will make it a book that kids will want to read over and over. Also, even though this story deals with the changes due to moving, it can also apply to any challenging change in life at any age.

Q: What comes first, the plot or characters?

For The Adventures of Molly & Ollie: Moving Day, the plot came first. I knew I wanted to write about the moving experience for kids. Then came the character of eight-year-old Molly. I was eight years old during my first move to a new town that I remembered. So, Molly came from that experience.

Q: How did you do research for your book?

One thing I researched was Molly’s toy animals. I Googled toy animals, to ensure that Molly could, in fact, have the specific animals. I then looked at the animals’ traits for their own special characteristics that I might be able to use in future books. For example, a turtle is slow moving, and a piggy bank holds money.

Q: What is the best part of your day?

Mornings are the best. With a fresh brewed cup of coffee, a view of nature, and some good thinking time.
