This is such an interesting, and new view of the birth of Jesus story! My kids and I absolutely loved it, and it’s going to be a part of our annual Christmas book traditions now!
Amal is the a camel without a big hump. All the camels talk and make fun because he won’t ever be able to go on the long trips that the camels go on. He doesn’t have a hump large enough to hold all the water they need! When Amal is called to duty to be part of a caravan with three men baring gifts for a new baby, he and the other camels learn a valuable lesson about how the camel body really works as well as how important a small camel can be!
This was an absolute delight to read! I loved the illustrations as we moved through the story. They were colorful and so detailed! The story was written really well, and it was so interesting! The kids were delighted with it, and needed to read it again three nights in a row! I highly recommend this for children in early elementary school!

Amal the Thirsty Gamal is for every child who might be struggling with how he or she is perceived by others. (Oh yes, camels care about that, too!) Our little hero has spent too many years listening to all the wrong voices and thinking all the wrong things: about his hump, about his appearance, about himself. But―oh!―get ready! Because “wise men” have joined this particular caravan journey, and when one of them speaks up around the campfire one night, everything changes for little Amal the Gamal!
