This was an interesting, captivating story! With beautiful descriptions and emotional writing, The Shade Under the Mango Tree will pull you in, and you won’t want to leave!

Luna has grown up in Hawaii living with her grandmother. They pick vegetables, rest under the mango tree, and just enjoy life! At 13, Luna moves to California to live with her mother and siblings. She doesn’t feel quite a home, and continues to visit her grandmother often. Her grandmother gifts Luna a journal, which Luna uses often. Her journal becomes such a part of her, until she loses it. When Lucien finds Luna’s journal, he becomes invested in her stories in her journal and wants to return it to her.

I really enjoyed the alternating POVs between Luna and Lucien. It was wonderful to get to know both characters, and to see what each was doing. I loved the parts that included Luna’s journal. It felt so honest and really let me get to know Luna. Overall, I thought this was a captivating story that readers will enjoy!

After two heartbreaking losses, Luna wants adventure. Something and somewhere very different from the affluent, sheltered home in California and Hawaii where she grew up. An adventure in which she can also make some difference.

Lucien, a worldly, well-traveled young architect, finds a stranger’s journal at a café. Though he has qualms and pangs of guilt about reading it, they don’t stop him. His decision changes his life forever.

Months later, they meet at a bookstore. Fascinated by his stories and adventurous spirit, Luna goes on a Peace Corps stint to a rural rice-growing village in Cambodia. There, she finds a world steeped in ancient culture and the lasting ravages of a deadly history. Will she leave this world unscathed?

An epistolary tale of courage, resilience, and the bonds that bring diverse people together.
