Death Warrant by Bryan Johnston

Person peeking through hole titled "Thriller"
Copy of Science Fiction with pink background and oversized moon with reflection in water

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Well, wow, this was a fun, inventive story that had me hoooooked! First of all, this concept, I can actually imagine people watching a show like this…which is probably why Bryan Johnston wrote this story. It was fast-paced and wildly entertaining!

There’s a TV show, Death Warrant, where people volunteer to be murdered on live TV, for a very large payout that is given to their designated family member. After the sign up, the person’s memory is wiped clean, and they do not remember that they have signed up to be assassinated. We follow Frankie’s story as she signs herself up for this, and then goes about her life, forgetting that she is a ticking time bomb.

I really enjoyed Frankie’s personality. She made this story fascinating. She’s funny and quite endearing, and you just want her to make through somehow…but no one has ever lived through Death Warrant. So, this story had me on the edge of my seat!

I would recommend this for readers that enjoy a fast-paced story in a future that isn’t too far off from where we’re headed today.

Death Makes Great TV.

Frankie Percival is cashing in her chips. To save her brother from financial ruin, Frankie—a single stage performer and mentalist who never made it big—agrees to be assassinated on the most popular television show on the planet: Death Warrant. Once she signs her life away, her memory is wiped clean of the agreement, leaving her with no idea she will soon be killed spectacularly for global entertainment.

After years of working in low-rent theaters, Frankie prepares for the biggest performance of her life as her Death Warrant assassin closes in on her. Every person she encounters could be her killer. Every day could be her last.
