Arabella and the Magic Pencil by Stephanie M. Ward

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Wow, my kids really understood and appreciated this story! Siblings are a wonderful thing, but sometimes they aren’t…Arabella shows us how frustrating siblings can be, but does that mean we don’t really want them around?

Arabella is a special girl with parents that love her. She also gets one wish granted each year. This year, she wishes for a magic pencil that will make anything that she draws come to life. She creates so many beautiful things with her imagination and her pencil. Then, her new brother disrupts her play, in frustration, she erases him! At first, she is happy but quickly realizes that she has made a mistake. Can she correct her error?

The Alphabet’s Alphabet by Chris Harris

Rating: 5 out of 5.

What an absolutely imaginative story for kids! This book not only helps children learn letters, but it gives them a chance to use their imagination as they see letters in a different way! I loved this book!

The book starts in a classroom for letters. The teacher wants to let the letters know that even though they look different, they really are all connected. We go through the alphabet from A to Z, and the story shows us how an A is really an H that is slouching or an F is an E on a ski. Each letter’s link to another letter is extremely imaginative!

Love, Sophia on the Moon by Anica Mrose Rissi – Kid’s Book Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

What I Loved:

Love, Sophia on the Moon tells the entire story through letters between a mother and daughter. I loved this concept! It was so cute to read their banter back and forth, and felt just like the kind of conversations I have had with my own children as they decide they would prefer to live somewhere else, then decide, maybe not!

How I Felt:

The writing was perfect for the story. All of the words in the book are on letters going back and forth between Sophia and her mom. The emotions that are felt with each letter are so evident through the words, and I really appreciated how the author was able to capture and convey them. I giggled at how the mother would write about how she was making a favorite dish of Sophia’s for dinner. Sophia would respond with a funny comment about how her mom shouldn’t make that because of this or that. It was so well-written and my daughter and I really enjoyed it!

Boxitects by Kim Smith – A Kid’s Book Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

What I Loved:

If you have kids, you know that a cardboard box is like Christmas…I guess that is true of cats too HAHA! Boxitects takes that fun, imaginative play and turns it into a wonderful story. I loved that there were not just Boxitects in this story but many different types of builders. It was a great idea for a book, and I loved reading it with my kids.

How I Felt:

Boxitects is a story about Meg, a young “boxitect” which is a builder of things with boxes. She starts a new school called the Maker School. She meets other children that are also builders but using blankets, egg cartons, tin foil, and even noodles! She is the only boxitect though. I really appreciated how Meg is introduced to others like her, and yet they all have their own niche. It was fun to learn about these different builders.

Friday Night Wrestlefest by J.F. Fox – A Kid’s Book Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

What I Loved:

The imagination in Friday Night Wrestlefest was so fun! A bedtime story that centers around the family, but with a wrestling twist. I just loved the concept and really enjoyed the book!

How I Felt:

The Story is told as if an announcer for a wrestling match is the narrator. I’m not a wrestling fan, but I still really enjoyed the references. The dad is getting the kids ready for bed, but like many bed times the kids resist a bit. For this family, the resistance is in the form of a wrestling match. There are adorable names for the wrestling moves each family member does, such as the Jumpin’ Jellyfish and each person also has a wrestling name, like Peanut Brother and Dangerous Daddoo.

The Writing is done well. There is so much excitement in the words, it makes the reader feel the anticipation and enthusiasm that surrounds this family’s bedtime.

The illustrations were so fun! They were bright and colorful and just made you feel the action that was going on. The text was just as exciting. The use of different fonts and sizes gave the story a life of its own!

Overall, our entire family really enjoyed Friday Night Wrestlefest. The story was really fun and a great twist on a bedtime story. The illustrations were bright and exciting. A great book all around!
