My goodness, I just really enjoy Nikki Bryant! She’s such a great main character for this series, and I was so excited to get her back in the second book in this series!
The thing I love so much about cozy mysteries is that I get the murder and investigative aspect, but it’s a bit more light hearted and fun! Lauren Carr knows how to capture that balance perfectly! This plot was so much fun! I loved how the story unfolded and everything that happened along the way!

Folks in the small town of Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, claim that where Nikki Bryant goes, trouble is not far behind. Her refusal to back down from a challenge has made Nikki Bryant a top investigative journalist.
After years of chasing mysteries around the globe, Nikki Bryant returns home to Pine Grove to take over managing WKPG-TV and reconnects with her first love, Ryan Spaulding, the chief of the state police crime lab.
It doesn’t take long for Nikki and her family to realize that you can’t keep this ace reporter and her boxer dog Elmo behind a desk–especially when a mystery is afoot.
One of the things I love about Lauren Carr’s books is her animals. She creates these animal characters that have a personality that you connect with! The Nutcracker Conspiracy did not disappoint me one bit with the animals woven into the story!
How I Felt:
The plot was so much fun. It’s a police procedural story, so I got lots of great details from the investigator’s perspective. The conspiracy really went back in time to pull all the details together, which made the fact-finding portion of the book really interesting. It also has that fun, humorous side that makes it feel lighthearted. Lauren Carr finds a great balance between the suspense and humor.
The characters in The Nutcracker Conspiracy were as wonderful as always! I like that Carr incorporates characters that we meet in other stories with the new ones. It just feels like I’m reading about friends. Gnarly, a favorite pup of mine is back again. If you enjoy the four-legged friends in stories, you’ll really get into this book. There’s even a lycanthrope lurking around!
I have so enjoyed this book! I loved the mix of humor and mystery. It has a wonderful collection of characters that make you feel right at home with the story!
How I Felt:
Killer Deadline introduces Nikki our strong, confident heroine, as she is leaving behind her successful career to return to her hometown and take over the family TV station. With her return to her hometown, Nikki is determined to uncover the mystery around her father’s unsolved murder. Just when she thinks another reporter is about to reveal valuable information about her father’s death, that reporter is murdered too! Nikki must solve this murder before she becomes the next target!
This story was filled with fabulous twists and turns that I’ve come to love from Lauren Carr. I was pulled into Killer Deadline from the first page and couldn’t put it down until the last. Carr has written an excellent, captivating cozy mystery that is the start of a great-looking series!
This was a fun mystery that got me so invested in the characters. They are silly and fun, and loving to each other. Their banter showed me just how good of friends they are, and how long they have known each other. It made me feel like I had been friends with them that long as well. Additionally, there is some really great (and silly) stuff that happens with the dogs and their over-sized personalities. It just made me laugh a lot. It was outrageous and perfect for the story. This was the first book I have read by Lauren Carr, but it will not be my last!
