The Ancestor by Lee Matthew Goldberg

This book was a bit like a time travel story for me. A man from the 1800’s wakes up in present-day Alaska, having been frozen for almost 200 years. I liked how the story takes the reader through the initial confusion of Wyatt, our frozen-in-time character. He is unsure of where he is and who he is. I thought that Lee Matthew Goldberg did an excellent job of bringing the reader into the story right from the beginning with this opening scene.

As the story progresses, we find Wyatt spiraling into this obsessive character. When I chose this book, I didn’t realize it would have this thriller aspect, so I was surprised when Wyatt finds who he believes is his great-great grandson, and becomes overly-attached to him, and his family. This obsessive behavior really turned this into an interesting read for me!

Majesty by Katharine McGee

I love books about royalty. I read American Royals and fell in love with the characters and the re-imagining of American history. When I got the chance to grab the second book, Majesty, I was SO excited. This book did not let me down!

Majesty picks up just a little after the end of the first book in the series, American Royals. We find the royal family, and the entire country mourning the death of the King. Beatrice is now the reigning monarch, and the first Queen in United States history. Her sister is not the next in line for the throne, which was a position Sam had never expected to be in, and Nina is happy to be out of the spotlight that comes with being friends with the royal family.

I loved that this book again provided different POVs from the characters. We have Nina, Beatrice, Sam, and Daphne all telling this story. This story still doesn’t make me like Daphne, but I really came to respect Beatrice. I loved watching her take on her new responsibilities, and work through all the problems.

The Time Capsule by Connie Lacy

What I Loved:

There was a lot I loved about this story! I loved the way the main character, Hannah, travels back in time. I loved the determination she had to make things right. It made her character so interesting, and I enjoyed her story!

My Synopsis:

Hannah Meyers has just quit her job and is looking forward to a break from some jerky co-workers. She heads to her theater practice where she holds a small role in a play. Through a set of events, she didn’t know she was putting into motion, she is propelled back in time to 1918.

Completely confused and disoriented, she stumbles around the theater, meeting two gentlemen that take pity on her. Through their kindness, she is set up in a boarding house, getting the chance to figure out what on earth has happened to her.

All she wants is to find out how to get back to her time, but when one thing after another happens, she realizes that she cares for the people she has met and that she may have a role to play in their lives.

How I Felt:

This book was so wonderful! It had time travel, which I love, but more than that, it was a wonderful story with characters that I cared about, and a wrap-up that I adored!

Virginia and the Vagabond by Skyler Frey

What I Loved:

Well, what a delightful book this was! I loved that this book had so many surprises. I literally had jaw-dropping moments multiple times in this book. Something completely unexpected would happen and I was just completely taken by surprise! I loved it!

My Synopsis:

We meet Virginia as she does her daily household duties for the Howards, a prestigious English family. Virginia, we soon find, has a secret! Two years ago, she stumbled across a time warp and landed in the past. She hasn’t figured out how to get home, so she has hung up her Metallica t-shirt and her dreams of owning an art gallery in exchange for the only work she can find, a lady’s maid.

She is about to give her notice to her employers when her lady shows her a photo of the gentleman caller for tonight’s dinner. Virginia cannot believe it. It is Eric Rylander, and Virginia knows him…from the future. Through an accidental comment, Eric realizes that Virginia is also from the future. A bond is immediately formed that leads to a steamy romance with one problem. Eric is all but engaged to Lady Lara Howard.

How I Felt:

Virginia and the Vagabond was more than just a romance. There are elements of a woman’s struggle for equality as well as touching on gender identity. I liked all the layers within the story that made it an engrossing read.

Going Through the Change by Samantha Bryant

What I Loved:

Going Through the Change had these great character changes that I was so interested in! I loved reading about the new struggles that each character went through with the introduction of a superhero skill for each person.

How I Felt:

The writing was well-done. The story had a nice flow and was easy to dive into. It was pretty fast-paced and really never slowed down. I liked the way each chapter focused on a different character. It gave different me different angles of the story and the opportunity to view a scene from a different perspective.

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood – Book Review

What I Loved:

The Testaments was everything I hoped it would be! I loved the three perspectives that this story was told through. It propelled the book forward and gave insight into different things that were happening. The three characters that were narrating had different experiences and thoughts, and I enjoyed all three.

How I Felt:

Hyped books come with a lot of expectation. I put off reading this one for quite a while. I was extremely worried I wouldn’t like it and would be utterly disappointed. The beginning of this book was a bit slow as the scene was set and characters were introduced. It picked up a few chapters in though, and didn’t slow back down at all!

The characters were surprising. I didn’t expect Aunt Lydia to make an appearance in this book, but I’m so glad she did. Her portions provided SO much backstory. She gave me all the answers to questions I had after reading The Handmaid’s Tale! She was rigid and strict, but she has another side that was surprising and extremely interesting.
